#23 Gillis catches Auerbach’s Eye

On a Monday night in March, Red Auerbach, coach of the Boston Celtics sat at the Boston Garden watching the 6’5″ Junior from Charlestown, Bob Gillis.

Charlestown was playing Winchester in the Class B finale.  Gillis was on his way to netting 33 points with 15 rebounds to lead the Bunker Hillers to a 73-59 victory. Gillis also went on to shatter the Class B scoring record.

After the game, Auerbach praised Gillis for his shooting and defensive ability. “That boy looks good out there. He plays well on defense and has a nice, soft touch with that ball” the redhead began.
